Splitting sites

Today, I surgically removed zonker.net from WordPress.com and co-hosting with Dissocated Press to have a cleaner split between personal and “professional” topics.  The next step will be figuring out what blogging software I want to use for Dissociated Press for the next 20 years or so and start self-hosting it again as well.

I don’t do a lot of blogging on Dissociated Press these days, since I spend most of my time writing about open source for LWN.net, but I’ve never been 100% comfortable mingling personal topics with posts meant for a much wider audience. Not that Dissociated Press gets millions of page views, but…

Anyway, I hope to pick up the pace of blogging here about random things that don’t fit for LWN.net and are too long or less ephemeral than what I put up on Mastodon.

Gratuitous birthday post 2023 style

Chalk up one more orbit around the Sun for me. Another year older and maybe a little wiser. Certainly the stretch between the last birthday and this one has been full of life lessons.

Not making much of a fuss about the birthday thing this year, just sort of quietly observing the occasion and spending time with the fam. A big slice of cake, some good food, perhaps just a sip or three of good Scotch, and a couple of presents to open.

The state of the world is… questionable… but I’m very happy with the people (and cats…) in my life and my quality of life. I have few wants for myself and am generally content. That’s a good place to be.

If you’re reading this and feel inclined to grant a birthday wish, though, I’d be grateful and very pleased if folks donated a few bucks to Animal House, Independent Animal Rescue, The Trevor Project, or any good cause.

Quick update

If this blog was a child, family services would have taken it away by now…

Sorry for the blog neglect, life’s been a whirlwind of activity for the last month or so. For those of you who don’t know already — I switched jobs at the beginning of September.

I’m now working as the editor-in-chief of Linux Magazine (the original, accept-no-substitutes Linux Magazine, by the way), which is an awesome gig. However, with “awesome” comes a lot of work and a lot of getting up to speed on doing things the print way. After years of doing the online publishing thing, print is a whole new world. (”Word count? What’s that? What do you mean we have to fill space / cut word count? How, exactly, can a paragraph have an orphan?”)

I worked on print stuff in college, and of course I wrote for Linux Magazine for years prior to working for Linux.com, but actually dealing with the layout stuff was pretty new.  (Speaking of which — anybody know a Linux proggy that will actually open QuarkXPress docs?)

So, in September I not only took the new job, but also went to VMworld for a week and the Ohio LinuxFest for a weekend. September was chock full of busy and I’m sure that October will be too, but not quite as much.

What have you been up to?
